I have a book of his photographs, curated by Michael Hiley. I saw an exhibition of his prints many years ago at a gallery in Whitby. He has a very modern aesthetic, IMO, despite being born in Victorian times. Definitely worth investigating for those unfamiliar with his work.
Excellent trip back in time, I've not had the pleasure of viewing his work before. I agree with Ms Roggeveen, ahead of his time. Thank you for this bit of time travel.
Yes Paul, that book titled "Frank Sutcliffe Photographer of Whitby" by Michael Hiley, published by Godine in 1974 is very good. The text is particularly interesting because it raises and discusses many of the early controversies about what photography is, isn't, should be, shouldn't be that Sutcliffe dealt with even back in the early days of the medium's development, as well as the kind of technical and aesthetic issues he faced and resolved given the means available at the time. Quite fascinating.

He was far ahead of his time!
I have seen some of his work before and I think it’s a fascinating look into a lost past.
Another historic photographer to mention is Olive Edis a female photographer who had a studio in Sheringham Norfolk.
