Frank Meadow Sutcliffe
PHOTOSNACK #715
It’s time for a history dive today.
Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (1853-1941) was an English photographer best known for his documentary images of Whitby and the surrounding North Yorkshire coast.
He photographed everyday coastal life with simple honesty, creating images that feel calm, close, and quietly human. There’s a gentle dignity in his work that still holds beautifully today.
Thank you, Arnie Stein, for reminding us of his work.
Until next time,
Tomasz

I have a book of his photographs, curated by Michael Hiley. I saw an exhibition of his prints many years ago at a gallery in Whitby. He has a very modern aesthetic, IMO, despite being born in Victorian times. Definitely worth investigating for those unfamiliar with his work.
