I only follow (by name) the classics (Irving Penn, Richard Avedon...) and am particularly fond of Guy Bourdin because of my own background in Fetish; I admire Brian Smith's work (and I know him personally, he took the pictures of me when I was featured in Newsweek decades ago). Mainly I like individual pix, but don't necessarily follow the photographer. For example, I used to go to the Morrison Hotel, in the Bowery, a lot just to look at their music industry pictures.
I began my professional photo career 49 years ago as a rock & roll photographer in Spain. I switched to advertising, meaning, I made more money in advertising, but I still photograph every week.
So, of course, two things: (1) I have a really keen eye for photography and (2) I'm old enough to not be politically correct or pretentious. When I see shitty pictures, I say so.
Have you looked at the rest of Koo’s work? His Soap series is reminiscent of Irving Penn’s Frozen and Flower work. Just because you don’t like this work doesn’t automatically translate to it being pretentious. Ever heard of minimalism? For some of us Koo’s work very beautiful. It’s not as easy to do as you might think.
Gregory... ever hear the word "patronizing"? Yes, I've heard of minimalism. It is also a serious flaw in logic that "just because you don't... blah blah blah". I'm not saying that it is pretentious because I don't like it. I am saying "I don't like it". Full stop. I find it pretentious. There are tons of other photography I don't like which I don't call pretentious. This one I do. And, naturally, if "not being as easy as it looks" defined art, painting on black velvet is the maximum, summum, crest of art... it's amazingly difficult to do. And it's awful too.
Very imaginative and striking photos. Thanks for sharing
Very interesting!
Interesting
Are you kidding me? These pix are pretentious crap.
Oh, it seems our tastes differ vastly, Marcelo. I love his work.
No kidding, very very different, yes
Who are some of the photographers whose work you like?
