These are photographs that don't always make me comfortable, and I think that's part of their strength. Pieter Hugo approaches people and places with a remarkably direct visual language, creating portraits that are often strange, intense, and difficult to forget.
I admire his willingness to explore complicated subjects without making the resulting pictures easy to interpret.
