In December 2009, Hannah Kozak began photographing her mother at the assisted living facility where she had been living for nearly thirty years. She entered the facility after her second husband beat her so severely that she suffered permanent brain damage.
This is a powerful example of very personal and honest photography.

wow. What a strong project, so sad and what a trauma it must also have left on the children who had to witness this. I often think, photography is like therapy. A phrase she used struck me, "from the safe distance of my lens". That's often how I feel when I am "armed" with my camera, at a safe distance.
