Gianni Berengo Gardin (1930–2025), often called Italy’s Cartier-Bresson, spent more than seven decades capturing the soul of his country in luminous black-and-white. From his iconic Vaporetto, Venice, 1960 (see above) to over 250 photobooks, his work blended poetic composition with deep social awareness, documenting everything from everyday street life to the dignity of workers and marginalized communities.
He passed away on August 6, 2025 at the age of 94, leaving behind an archive of more than 1.5 million images — a legacy that will continue to inspire photographers to pair artistry with empathy, and to see the extraordinary in the everyday.
You can see a selection of his work on the website of Peter Fetterman Gallery.
Until next time,
