Ernest Withers’s photographs feel alive to me because they stand right inside history rather than looking at it from a distance. There is urgency, dignity, and human closeness in the way he documented the Civil Rights Movement, Black life in the South, and the Memphis music scene.

What I really love is that his pictures are not only important records; they still have warmth, rhythm, and presence, which makes them feel deeply human before they feel historical.
