What draws me into Charles Cramer’s landscapes is the light. It never feels decorative; it seems to quietly reorganize the whole scene, turning rocks, trees, mist, and water into something almost musical.

Here is my Sunday thought.

This is a vase of flowers on the table in my living room.

Nothing special. And the photograph is blurred.

Years ago, I probably would have dismissed it immediately: out of focus, too grainy, not precise enough.

But I like it.

More and more, I find myself less interested in photographs that explain everything perfectly. Sharpness can describe beautifully, but it can also close an image down too quickly.

Blur does something else. It removes information. The flowers become less about flowers and more about shape, tone, memory, suggestion.

Of course, blur alone doesn’t make a photograph interesting. But sometimes imperfection creates space — for imagination, for uncertainty, for the viewer to bring something of their own.

These days I ask myself less often whether a photograph is technically good.

I ask something simpler:

Does it make me stop?
Does it transform something familiar?
Does it leave something unresolved?

If it does, that may be enough.

Today, sadly, I am returning to it for a different reason.

The great Italian photographer died at the age of 92, last Saturday, August 29.

He was one of photography’s true masters of colour — someone who could look at an ordinary landscape, a wall, a road or a shadow and reduce it to colour, shape, rhythm and emotion. At a time when serious photography was still largely associated with black and white, he showed just how powerful and sophisticated the language of colour could be.

If you read PHOTOSNACK regularly, you may remember that I recently featured the work of British photographer Matt Peers.

His photographs immediately caught my attention. There is a quietness to them that makes me slow down. People, streets, urban spaces, small details — but underneath all of that, there seems to be a deeper curiosity about how people inhabit places, how those places change, and what photography can tell us about our own lives.

So I invited Matt for a conversation.

We talked about his decision to work predominantly with analog photography, approaching strangers on the street with a Rolleiflex, the relationship between people and place, photographing Birmingham and Sicily, working in long-term projects, and his belief that making art is partly our way of trying to understand why we are here.

We also looked closely at five of his photographs and talked about the stories behind them.

I particularly enjoyed this conversation because Matt doesn’t speak about photography simply as making successful individual images. For him, it seems to be an ongoing way of looking, questioning, connecting things, and slowly building a photographic world.
